Adobe Style Rammed Earth Home in Southern New Mexico

The Organ Mountains serve as a perfect backdrop to Soledad Canyon Earth Builder’s latest creation.  This 2, 727 sq. ft. rammed earth home sits on the eastern side of Las Cruces, New Mexico.  We have affectionately nicknamed this home “Casa de Tierra 2010″.  It is a three bedroom, 2 1/2 bath home with an open floor plan.  A kiva fireplace graces the great room—it is finished with a venetian plaster.  The electricity for this home is produced by Photovoltaic Panels on the roof.  Enjoy the visit to the Barker’s New Mexico Home!

This home has many features my wife and I find attractive. The finished latilla ceilings, the rear portal, interior and exterior poles and corbels and the roof-mounted solar installation all are feature we’d to include in our next home.

I’m curious, what was the approximate cost per square foot for this home?

These houses are just magnificent to look at. I’m wondering how thick the outside and inside walls are and how much per square foot they end up costing, including the solar panels on the roof
      Thank you

      Hi Sarah,
Thanks for your comments! The walls on the rammed earth homes are 18″ of earth and another 2 1/2″ of foam insulation and stucco. It creates a very solid feeling in the home. The costs for a custom home vary so much depending on what you want in your home. Everything from your appliance package to the flooring, to lighting and plumbing fixtures. Please feel free to email us (from the contact page) and we can discuss further. Pat

WOW What a great home. Did you have any problems getting permits to build an Earth home?. I am looking for land to build a berm home and wondered if it would be hard to get the required permits to build. Can a home like this be built in 6 mos?
      Thanks

We have been building earth homes as a business for 25+ years. New Mexico has building codes that pertain to rammed earth construction. So it is not a problem to get a building permit Our plans and specification follow codes and best building practices. The construction time depends on the scope of the project—size, site, who is building it, weather conditions, etc., etc. Hope this is helpful.
