Hi Everyone,
Week slow down, got a lot to do, could use more time!! Can’t we all use a bit more time? But it is one thing that we all have equally! Not money, love,or patience, only time!! Showcase of Homes 2010 is upon us. It is an exciting time for all of us at Soledad Canyon Earth Builders. We are given the privilege of showing you our work. Our clients are willing to open their new home to the public. We are very grateful for that opportunity. We love showing our work! On that note, we cordially invite everyone to visit us at 4011 Quail Brush Court. Located east of town in Desert Mirage. From the corner of University and Telshor drive east on Dripping Springs Road for 4.8 miles, turn right on Desert Mirage Drive, go 1/2 mile, turn right on Desert Mirage Ct.
This 2,727 sq. ft. rammed earth home for the Barker’s is our typical “Uniquely New Mexico” style home. We are calling it “Casa de Tierra 2010″. Solar Power of Las Cruces has installed Photovoltaic Solar Panels on the Showcase Home! The Barker’s will producing electricity for their home for years to come and El Paso Electric will be paying them for the electricity produced!!! It has terrific energy, great views, solid comfort and fine art work. Again this year we are pleased to be able to Showcase several local artists. With the help of Catherine Brenner of the Unsettled Gallery and David Shaw, photographer extraordinaire, we will be displaying beautiful works of art.
My utmost gratitude to Team Soledad for all their
hard work in making the house a home!
As we finish up Showcase we are also completing the Rincon de Amigos home. We will photograph and post on our website the completed home. The Rincon de Amigos home will welcome it’s new owners sometime the middle of May. We will be as excited for them as they are in accepting their new home!
We are ready to start a new phase of building with new projects. The Hays home in the Pueblos is ready to start the rammed earth walls. Jean has been working with us for three years-maybe four. Her slab is poured, we will begin ramming walls next week!
We are also in the final stages of the plans for the Picacho Mountain project! Another extraordinary project for some extraordinary clients on an extraordinary piece of property!!
For now, I will sign off. Got a house to go finish! There are many events and activities to take part in around Las Cruces over the next two weeks. Everything from the First Annual Onion Fiesta in Mesilla, to La Vina Wine Festival, the Cinco de Mayo celebration and of course the 2010 Showcase of Homes.

Dear SCEB’s Internet World,
I still cannot get used to writing 2010! Anyone else having trouble? Only five weeks until our Showcase of Homes! We will be working hard to present you
with our latest rammed earth home that we are in love with! We met with the landscaper a few days ago. That is a definite sign that the house will be turning into a home soon! We also made a really cool change yesterday-found a beautiful piece of travertine that we are going to use for the island bar top. Nothing like a natural stone to make a rammed earth home feel even more solid than it already does! Mother Nature sure does create beautiful pieces of art, and we love displaying them.
The crew is ramming the courtyard wall at the Showcase home today. After our quest for stabilized adobes fell short we decided we had to build the wall out of our favorite earth—rammed earth. It gives the home even a bit more permanency!
We have created a real treat for the home owners on this home—vigas and cedar grape stakes on the back portal. They look so beautiful—they complement the Organ Mountains quite well!
We are putting in the finishing pieces
on the Rincon De Amigos home. The plumber was there yesterday installing sinks, faucets and commodes. The water will be flowing soon. We are expecting our friends at El Paso Electric to show up with a permanent electrical meter any day now. Most of the cabinet units are in place, the tile setter is just about done with his work. It is very gratifying to see a home come together after many months of planning and building.
The ground is “broken”! We have officially begun our next project in The Pueblos. We “met” Jean three years ago via email correspondence all the way from New York. As with each of our projects we are excited about creating our next reality. Each home and each client is special and this one no less. We are grateful for the trust and confidence they give us. We never take it for granted. We look forward to creating a home for Jean.
We continue our work on the plans for the home with the basement to be located in Picacho Mountain. We just received the elevations and electrical plan. Yippee!
For those of you who read these E-newsletters you know that I am an Aggie Basketball Fan. You can guess I am very excited that the boys have made it into the NCAA tournament. Their effort in the last two games was so cool to watch. They had a determination that put them in the winning column. We’ll be cheering them on Friday evening as they play Michigan State in Spokane, WA. GO AGGIES!!!
If you have not been to the Rio Grande Theater, then it’s time that you go. I attended a concert there over
the weekend and again was so appreciative of the facility. It was renovated with such care. Local band, Nuevo Sol, played the warm up for a group from San Francisco, La Cura. Nuevo Sol was really good. If you ever have the opportunity to hear them, do so. They are such good local talent….Latin rock with blues thrown in the mix. The saxophone player was really awesome.
Soledad Canyon Earth Builders now has its own Facebook page. Yes, Facebook! It is not only for young people. I’m posting on it almost daily. It’s a mini E-Newsletter. It’s fun to keep in touch with the world through this social phenomenon. Sign up and follow us!!
So as I close another entry into my “Soledad Canyon Diary” I leave you with this thought: “Keeping it simple makes it easier to find things in your house, your head, and your heart.” Eliza Rhodes from her book Sign Language

The spring flowers in the Las Cruces desert should be great this year! I don’t ever remember this much winter rain in our usually dry climate. I certainly don’t remember the beautiful Organ Mountains with snow on them for days/weeks on end! We do have it easy, even though it’s been a “bit tough” scheduling the work on our Showcase home around the rain. I look at the other parts of the
country and can’t imagine working in two-three feet of snow! The sun is shining again today.
Construction updates: The Rincon de Amigos home has been painted. The tile setters are tiling the floors and should be done with the floors by the end of the week. They will then start on the showers. Cabinet installation will be next. We will begin seeing the house turn into a home! The interior selections we made with the clients several months ago will be
finding their place in the home.
The Barker’s Showcase 2010 Home has a roof on it!! Yippee! We have been battling with the rain showers over the last month. Finally we are dried in. Windows and doors are installed, American Mechanical, our plumber is done with their top-out, and Holguin’s Electric has begun their rough-in. Our crew, Antonio, Raul, Chuy, Junior and Nemesio are hanging interior doors, building the fireplace, and sanding, staining and sealing the wood in the house—vigas, door trim, door jams. We are on course for completing the home for the Building Industry Association’s Spring Showcase of Homes. Mark your calendars…

Since my last E-News I have been to Las Vegas, Nevada for the International Builder’s Show.
Hundreds of vendors were displaying and promoting their products. There was a definite “green” theme to the Convention. Most suppliers and manufactures are tuned in to the importance of providing green products to the marketplace. The show was smaller than those I have attended in the past, yet there was plenty to do and see in the three days. The Keynote Speaker/Opening ceremony provided broad view of the industry as a whole. There is much optimism among those involved in building homes. As in any “down” time it provides opportunity to re-evaluate our businesses, create new ways of doing business, and come up with new products. I came back with a suitcase full of product information. One of my favorite new products was a shade system for outdoor areas. It is medal cut into great looking designs. Very durable as well as good looking!
Occasionally at these shows you run into celebrity types.
I have a picture on our office bulletin board of me and Al-Tim Taylor’s assistant on Home Improvement comedy show from a few years back. He was a face person for a line of Garage Doors. This year the Kohler booth had Monica Pederson and Ed Sanders. Monica is the host for HGTV’s Dream Home Show. You may have seen her over the last 2 months as she showed the TV viewing audience the 2010 Dream Home located between Santa Fe & Albuquerque. The drawing for that home was on Friday, guess I didn’t win…no phone call over the weekend! We talked for a bit at the IBS Show. She said the New Mexico Dream home was her favorite of all times. She really loved New Mexico. My second celebrity encounter was with Ed Sanders, who is on Extreme Makeover Home Edition. There was only enough time to snap a picture with him. But fun, no less!
Locally speaking, the New Mexico State University Aggie Basketball team continues to do well! Go Aggies! With two more home games the season comes to an end. I’m rooting for their continuation into the post season tournaments. If you live in Las Cruces I encourage you to come out on Saturday night, Feb. 27th for their final home game. It is an inexpensive night of entertainment—that is if you like a good, athletic game of basketball!!! Go Jonathan!! Even if you don’t it’s great for “people watching”!
The Love of Art Month is winding down, yet there are several more opportunities to enjoy the great works of Art in Las Cruces. Check the website www.artformsnm.org to download an event guide. Art does enrich your life—art that is created by others or art that you create yourself. Make a point of enriching your life….
I just can’t help myself……yes, this is an E-newsletter that comes from our business, Soledad Canyon Earth Builders. But, I find a need to usually interject a personal side to the business side. After all, everything is connected to everything. I really wonder what it takes for people to realize how “lucky” they are. (I use the word lucky, although I do not mean it in the true sense of the word!) How lucky we are to live in the United States, how lucky we are to have all the conveniences and luxuries we have available to us, how lucky we are to have the opportunity to love and be loved, to be sheltered and shelter, to give and to receive, and to have a job to keep our lives balanced. Do what it takes to help you realize how good your life is…..make a list, talk to someone, keep a journal, tell yourself one thing a day that is good (it takes 5 seconds!) or maybe just live your life with a different twist for a moment. Smile at a stranger, hold the door open for someone, give up jealousy, appreciate your partner, and then you can open yourself up to what you dream about. What I know for sure….any individual in your life may not be here next week, make it easier for them to love you today.

Happy New Year,
It is a mind game to wrap my head around the year 2010. That does not compute on a visceral level! How can it be 2010 when it was just 2000??!! It is certainly a good time to evaluate, contemplate, and celebrate!
Soledad Canyon Earth Builders enters the new decade with optimism, opportunities and options.
Optimism comes from the view of the world that provides a person and a business with hope. It looks at any situation and makes the best of it. We have many reasons to be optimistic. We have work. We are building houses that provide more than homes. They are quality structures that will last for many, many years. The emotional payback is long term.
Opportunities are there for the taking. Each day we have an opportunity to make our homes better. If we know better, we do better (Maya Angelo). We learn to be better from our clients, our business partners, our readings, our associations, and our own quest for learning more-the internet
sure makes that easy!
And third, options. Each day we can choose one option over another option. It can be in terms of a building product, a decision about which way to build it, or just a simple decision such as how to respond to a client. Each decision by itself can be small, but has a cumulative effect. It results in your reputation, how people view you and your business, and your well being.
The Barker’s home is taking shape. The framing is taking place, the trusses are on site, the windows are ready to be delivered with a phone call, and the weather is mostly cooperating! The Barkers are in town and have, to the delight of our crew, provided hot drinks and breakfast burritos to the Crew several mornings! What a treat for them!
The Rincon de Amigos home is being insulated today. The first phase of open cell spray foam insulation is being applied. It is going to “close up” the house. All windows and doors are installed. The plumbing, electrical and framing inspections are complete. Everything approved. We will complete the insulation of the garage and sound insulation early next week and on to drywall installation. Owner, Nancy, will make her first on site visit in another week. She will be here to finalize the courtyard wall and see her home first hand. They will be moving to Las Cruces when their home is complete, otherwise they have been receiving picture updates during the construction. Building a home for someone who is not living here yet is easy for us. What allows us to do that is the extensive planning we do before we break ground. All selections,
budgets and decisions have been made. We just have to line up everyone and build the home!
We have an opportunity to participate in a project to build a home not far from our office in an infill area. All the homes (33) in the subdivision are proposed to be Green Certified with solar power. If you know anyone interested please contact me. It would aim to be in the $250,000 price range.
On the fun side of life in Las Cruces, the last month has provided many events, and social gatherings that make Las Cruces (and New Mexico) so enjoyable. Many I been with the great people in my life. The Legend, Willie Nelson, brought joy to my spirit last night. He preformed the first of 50 concerts in El Paso. His music has touched my life for the last 30 years! He is going strong, with a voice unmatched by anyone!
I had the opportunity to visit one of New Mexico’s treasures over the Holidays, Ojo Caliente. It is a Hot Springs Resort/Spa an hour north of Santa Fe—a beautiful spot, with comforting hot mineral waters. A day trip while we were there included the historic Sanctuary of Chimayo and the Ghost Ranch area. Oh so beautiful.
Closer to home was just plain fun with family and friends, good food, good movies, and a blazing fire. What I know for sure is there is nothing that can make you feel better than the special people in your life. Take the time to enjoy them, appreciate their individualities, and look at life from many sides.
We wish you the best in 2010. We welcome and appreciate the opportunity to be a part of your life. If you are ready to build a home in Las Cruces we would be thrilled to talk to you. We will offer you opportunities, optimism, and options!
This time of year I run across many inspirational thoughts. This one caught my eye…. It’s imperative that you bring forth your soul’s greatest desire, that you pick one goal to achieve in the outer world and one goal to achieve in your inner world.
Here’s wishing you a year that you have a desire to set goals and a year that you want to reach those goals!
Happy New Year,

A common question
people ask when inquiring about our building process is ‘Can you build all year around?’ Of course, the answer is yes, mostly. Every now and then we have a weather condition that stops us from working safely. Well, that day was yesterday and today! Our first winter ‘storm’ of the season arrived on Sunday. The Organ Mountains are beautiful. Since I live at the base of those beautiful Organ Mountains I usually get to enjoy the snow fall up close and personal. This morning was particularly beautiful. The snow was thick and heavy. It made for great snow play! Check out this Snow person that my granddaughter and I made this morning! Topped off with strawberry eyes, snap pea eyebrows, potato nose and olives for a smile!
The construction on the two homes we have going was put on hold for two days. We’ll be back on them by tomorrow. The sun is shining again! The rammed walls on the house in Desert Mirage are taking shape. We will be ramming over the next couple of weeks or so. We should be finished with the ramming by Christmas. As always, if you are interested in seeing the process of ramming the walls let us know and we’d be glad to show you.
The house on Rincon de Amigos has really become a house-interior framing is complete, the windows are scheduled to be installed by the end of the week, the heating and cooling duct work has been installed, and we will be doing an electrical walk through early next week.
I usually try to get this E-news out around the middle of the month. I am behind on my self imposed schedule by a couple of weeks. The activities in my life over the last month+ have kept me busssyyy! Since our last E-News I have much to report on! First off I want to thank my dear friends/clients the
Ross’ for the evening dedication of “Calle de Bellestri.” Barb & Irv have erected a street sign on the road just next to their home. They dedicated the sign by having a few Soledad Canyon Earth Builder Homeowners over for a potluck dinner. What a special evening. I was so touched by the support of everyone. Especially as the first year anniversary of Mario’s passing was upon us. Contrary to popular belief, I love mixing business and pleasure! I have the best clients in the world! So many have become my friends and I love it!
The next big event in the month of November was the High Heels for High Hopes Runway Style Show to benefit the March of Dimes. Oh, what a night! I was so nervous! The room was packed with 350+ guests, the 60′ runway was ready, and the spotlights were on us! Three minutes of my life I will treasure forever! I want to thank everyone who so generously donated to the March of Dimes on my behalf! My total was $5,339!!! It was a fun evening despite my jitters. I want to especially thank my fellow builder, Kevin McGinley of McGinley Construction, who really went all out with his high heels and raised a large portion of my total. Thanks so much, Kevin. And a special thanks to all my sisters who are always there by my side supporting me.
The Jones had an Open House in November (we completed their home this summer). Oh what a joy it was to see how they have turned their house into a home. It was especially cool because it is not our typical southwestern style home. It is “our” contemporary rammed earth home. The owners have done a beautiful job of decorating their home. It felt so good to be there.
New Mexico State Aggies have begun their Basketball Season. As a season ticket holder I look forward to the excitement of Aggie Basketball! Although the game with UNM was a disappointing loss I have much hope for the team. I love watching the athleticism of the players. They play hard for two hours, and win or lose I love ‘em. It’s great family entertainment. If you haven’t enjoyed a game at the Pan Am Center I encourage you to take one in!
Speaking of sports, we were in Dallas over Thanksgiving week and enjoyed the Dallas Cowboys show at the new amazing Cowboys Stadium. What an architectural masterpiece. We were able to take an hour and a half stadium tour while we were there to get a peak at behind the scenes and on the field. I was in awe of the structure of the building as well as the whole dynamics of marketing a football team. Building a home seems pretty simple after looking at that building!!!
The month was filled in with many other special times with family and friends. Girlfriend dinners, a few good movies, Renaissance Craftsfaire, Dia del Muertos, a visit to the Fort Worth Zoo, and a shopping trip to Ikea.
I do want to take a moment to give a mention to Mario. I don’t understand how a year can go by so fast. Now I don’t have to say to myself ‘a year ago Mario & I were doing such and such.’ It is a milestone for me. Not that this day is different than a month ago. It’s just another way to look at it. There are a lot of things I miss about Mario. As it relates to our business it is that excitement that he had for starting a new project. It was his favorite part of building…laying out the house, doing the dirt work, placing the house and pouring the slab. Beginning with nothing and ending with a home….. I miss being able to talk for hours on end about our business. He was always ready to take on a challenge. He began the business with a challenge. What other home builder would start out by building rammed earth homes and promoting them as what they were-environmentally friendly, healthy homes. That was 24 years ago. Today we stand ready to see the next 24 years come before us with Max coming into the business in a couple of weeks. He will be graduating from New Mexico State University on December 12th!! A new journey is ahead of us, and we are looking for passengers! Thanks to everyone for your unending support. Max, Melissa & I look forward to our continuation of Soledad Canyon Earth Builders.
One last note. During the weeks after Mario’s passing many, many of you wrote in his Guest book online. The words & thoughts you shared are so precious to me. The book will be going off line by the end of the month. I am going to print the book and pictures the last week of the month. I will treasure the words in the book forever. If you would like to add anything to it I welcome it. Here is the link to the site: http://www.legacy.com/gb2/default.aspx?bookid=8740379237402

October 23, 2009 Newsletter
Hi Followers of Soledad Canyon Earth Builders!
Don’t you just love New Mexico in October! Warm days, cool, crisp nights, a sky full of stars and beautiful sunsets.
It is a great time to be ramming walls. The guys do not have to put up with the hot days of summer while they are working so hard. As of today we are about ¾ of the way done with the Amigos de Rincon home.
I’m still amazed every time we build those 18″ walls–I think to myself “this home is going to be here for many, many, many years.” It is so solid! I’m very thankful to those people who decide to take that extra step in building a rammed earth home. Don’t get me wrong, I’m also very grateful to those who don’t, but still want a quality frame home built by Soledad Canyon Earth Builders! We do our best to create a long lasting home for them also!
We have broken ground on the house on Quail Brush! The dirt work is complete, the plumber has completed his rough-in, and the concrete guys will be digging their footings over the next few days. There is nothing like taking a bare piece of land and creating a home on it. From conception to reality, from a dream to real life, from nothing to something.
As October continues along we fill our weekends with many “fiestas” and fun events and several business related activities. Over the last month there has been so much fun in our midst! There was dinner with Los Lobos before their performance at the Whole Enchilada Fiesta. Yes, I had dinner with the legendary band….. It was very enjoyable meeting all the band members, sharing some good New Mexican food with some vegan dishes thrown it there too…..prepared by yours truly. Then there was a meeting in Albuquerque with CID (Construction Industries Division) and earth builders to discuss code issues relating to the construction of earth homes. Very productive meeting. Last weekend Max, Melissa, Felice & I visited Albuquerque’s Parade of Homes. Saw 7 homes on Saturday. It is always a worthwhile trip to see what is out there in Albuquerque’s market. Throw in Disney on Ice with favorite granddaughter, Empty Bowls, and the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Las Cruces Home Builders Association (now Building Industry Association of Southern New Mexico). A well rounded month of events for all of us at Soledad Canyon Earth Builders.
The next few weeks will continue to be filled in the same manner. We have begun making selections for another house, come to another stage of the floor plan on the Picacho Mountain house, and bringing in costs for a third future project. All rammed earth homes! Again, want to remind you-if you’ve never seen the rammed earth walls going up let us know. We’ll show you that process as it takes place over the next 3-4 weeks.
On a community note, there is the NMSU Aggie Homecoming this weekend…parade, football and some tailgating. We’ll welcome family Aggie Alumni for the festivities-my niece & her husband from Phoenix. The weekend of the 31st will be a local cultural event in Mesilla. The Dia del Muerto Celebration on the Plaza. And before we know it will be the Annual Dona Ana Arts Council’s Renaissance Craftsfaire on November 7-8.
On November 19th I will make my first and last appearance on the Runway! On behalf of the March of Dimes I will be modeling at the Hotel Encanto. The event is High Heels for High Hopes. I continue to seek donations for this effort! They can be made on the website: jailandbail.marchofdimes.com/Bellestri. You can also buy tickets for the event at www.highheelsforhighhopes.com. I would sincerely appreciate your support. I am also selling raffle tickets for three Designer-esque handbags. Just give me a call or email and I’d be glad to come to you for any of the above-donation, tickets, or raffle chances.
I’d like to give a big thank you to the nine Las Cruces fellow Builders who participated in The Hard Hats for High Heels Breakfast. We laughed for three hours. The guys were such good sports and they put on a great show. Hope you caught the front page of the Sun News on Oct 3rd…a fabulous picture of the Builders donning their heels. If you are interested in that photograph let me know.
To close out this month I leave you with this thought. In decorating your home remember to use your instinct…place things in your environment that mean something to you, that you want around you, that make you feel good. Eclectic is good decorating.
Remember to cherish what you have (and it does not have to be just the big things). Be it your friendly neighbor, your dog or cat, your pantry full of food, your fingernail, your car, your books, and of course, your home. What we have in our lives is much to be grateful for. Give thanks every day. Create a thankful persona and people will be thankful to you.
I am thankful to all you readers-I appreciate your feedback.

So much to do, so little time!
It certainly is Fiesta time in the Mesilla Valley and places close by……filling the freezer with chile, James Taylor Concert, once every five year dinner at Café Central, Tough Enough to Wear Pink Aggie football game, NMSU vs. UTEP football game that ended at midnight (postponed because of lightning), breaking ground on a new 2,550 sq. ft. rammed earth house north of town (check out the view) and preparing to sign a contract on a house (hopefully it will be our Showcase 2010 Home!) All this within the last two weeks! There are so many events coming up in the next two weeks. The Whole Enchilada Fiesta (Los Lobos will be performing!), On the River, for the River (Southwest Environmental Center Event-link below), and of course, the Hard Hats and High Heels Breakfast! You ask what the Hard Hats & High Heels Breakfast is….well, let me tell you! Pay close attention, get your calendar out. As a “Celebrity Model” for the Annual March of Dimes Fashion Show (to be held in November–more on that later) it is my duty to raise money for the March of Dimes. So-on Friday….. October 2, 2009 you are invited to have breakfast with Nine Celebrity Builders in High Heels & Hard Hats! Yes, it will be as much fun as it sounds. Between 7:00 – 10:00 a.m. (come and go) you can have breakfast with Builders: Kevin McGinley, Dan Diemer, Gabe Sandoval, Farrell Thurston, John Hadley, Mike Clifford, Judd Singer, Wayne Suggs, and JB Stearns – all decked out in high heels, hard hats and aprons. They will be “serving” breakfast for tips and votes. This will be an opportunity to buy votes–”Best Legs” & “Legs-that-need-the-most-Help”. Prizes will be awarded! Breakfast will be on a donation basis, so bring your checkbook or credit card. I am doing this event with Morgan Switzer (Real Estate Guide of Las Cruces). Our goal is to raise $7,000 ($3,500 each) for the March of Dimes. If you are not able to make it that day and are willing to donate to the cause please visit www.HighHeelsForHighHopes.com and go to my page: Pat Bellestri-Martinez below. My sponsoring Salon is Duncan Nobel. Breakfast will be generously provided by Mesilla Valley Kitchen, The Shed, Walmart and Andele’s. For me this is one of the great things about living in Las Cruces; We can get together with our “Competitors,” have a good time, share laughs and raise money for a good cause. Las Cruces Builders are the best!
We are looking forward to the Fall as we power up our Construction crew again. Cool mornings, sunny warm afternoons, and beautiful blue skies. The guys are anxious to get back to doing what they do best, building homes! They are especially ready to Ram the walls. If you have an interest in watching that process let us know and we will let you know the days they will be ramming. As always, we remind our Soledad Canyon Earth Builders homeowners to be mindful of maintenance. Homes need regular care and attention.
Look forward to sharing the construction process of the next few rammed earth homes through this e-newsletter. May the first day of Autumn bring you that sense of well being and comfort that we cherish.
